Sealing Porcelain Mosaic Tile

Porcelain mosaic tile is defined as small pieces of tile, installed in designs and treated the same way as the larger high fired, tough and durable porcelain tiles. The grout of the porcelain mosaic tile needs to be sealed, especially considered beneficial for wet area safety.

Porcelain mosaic tile countertops are not only heat resistant but also durable and are offered in several colours and patterns and this makes them an ideal kitchen choice. High density porcelain mosaic tiles absorb no water so they are also used for shower areas as well as a countertop but they are not scratch proof so can be damaged in the kitchen.

Water seeping behind the porcelain tile can rot the surface on which it is installed. Whether or not to seal a porcelain tile can be tested by water. Tile which absorbs water will darken when water is added so it needs to be sealed. Cleaning kitchen porcelain tile countertops can be difficult because of the grout. The grout in the joint can easily be harmed with acidic cleaners and worse for sand grout. Non sand grout with latex additive is a better choice for the installation of porcelain tile countertops. You’d better use a pH balanced cleaner with a soft bristled brush to clean the dirt.

Sealing the grout makes it more water resistance and no mildew develops. Prefer a coloured grout because grout gets stained easily between a porcelain countertop, but a coloured grout is less noticeable. You should apply the sealer best at least 48 hours after grouting so that the grout has time to finish setting. You can seal it with a silicone or waterbased sealer.
