Roman Mosaics

Ancient Rome

Ancient Rome was first founded on the Italian peninsula along the Mediterranean Sea. Ancient Rome civilization became one of the largest empires  growing out of a small agricultural community in the10th century BC. Roman civilization was a monarchy, then became an oligarchic republic and turned into an  increasingly autocratic empire as South-Western Europe, South-Eastern Europe  through conquest and assimilation. The contribution of Ancient Rome to the development of government, law, war, art, literature, architecture, technology, religion and language was great in the Western world and its history still has a major influence on the world today.

Roman Mosaics

Roman mosaics should depict a clear picture or design and mostly pictures of animals, people or war scenes. They can also be depicted as mazelike geometric designs. Actually, creating a Roman mosaic picture is an excellent way to add a different look with a unique decoration to your place. Obviously, it takes time, especially if the design is larger. You need to apply each tile individually, so even smaller designs will take time but they don’t have to be perfect because an uneven texture will enhance the attractive look of the piece.

Ancient Roman Mosaics

Mosaic work was first inherited from the Greeks and they probably learnt of this art of Roman mosaics from the Orient in the 8th century BC., around the same period when Rome was founded. The first way of making mosaics was the laying of coloured pebbles in a more or less uniform manner. To achieve a flatter surface pebbles were broken and by the fourth century BC, the individual pieces of mosaics were refined to the cubes we are accustomed to. By the second century BC, the technical perfection of  coloured Roman mosaics were achieved in central Italy.

Roman Mosaic pattern on a shop floor would generally be two tone as black and white. The pieces were called tessellae, the black one, basalt, the volcanic lava rock or tesserae, the white one made of marble in a different size even within the same mosaic. The shape of the tesserae depended on the mosaic pattern. A simple geometric pattern with essentially straight lines and rectangular forms would only require tesserae of square or rectangular section.
